This is an Aladdin "Nu-Type" Model B kerosene burner, a precisely engineered lighting component produced by the Mantle Lamp Company of America between approximately 1933 and 1955. Its design represents a technological advancement in wick-based illumination, primarily defined by its side-draft air flow system and optimized mechanical components. Design Paradigm: The Model B transitioned from the older "center-draft" designs (Models 1-12) to a "side-draft" system. This innovation allowed air intake through perforations in the burner basket (visible in the image), which simplified the overall lamp architecture and accommodated a wider variety of lamp font (base) materials, particularly glass. Mechanical Engineering: A notable feature is the improved wick raiser mechanism. It incorporates large, coarse rack-and-pinion gearing designed for smoother operation and greater longevity compared to earlier models. The outer wick tube was also shortened to facilitate easier wick installation and maintenance. Materials and Manufacturing: The core burner components, including the piece shown, were typically made of brass to ensure optimal thermal and operational characteristics. The manufacturing was outsourced to Plume & Atwood in Connecticut, despite the Chicago, Ill.

Marking on the wick knob, which denotes the company headquarters location. Production Context: Production of the Model B burner ceased abruptly in 1955 when the Plume & Atwood factory was destroyed by a flood, resulting in the permanent loss of the original tooling. The design was held in high regard for its efficiency and reliability. This burner has a model B burner body, and a model 23 gallery. The gallery themselves are cross-compatible because they share a similar design that fits the Lox-On chimney and the same mantle.

It is missing the model B wick, wick raiser and outer wick tube. There's also a small dent at two of the air intake holes, as shown in the last photo with the holes circled in red. However, these parts are still widely available brand new.
